An input/output (IO) selection problem is reviewed from the viewpoint of an IO selection method and its properties. An IO selection method is chosen, focusing on one of the following items: 1. accessibility 2. state controllability and state observability 3. right half-plane zeros 4. input-output controllability 5. efficiency of manipulation and estimation 6. combined robust stability and nominal performance 7. robust performance 8. search methods For each IO selection method, the eight properties listed below are examined: 1. well-foundedness 2. efficiency 3. effectiveness 4. general applicability 5. rigorousness 6. quantitativeness 7. controller independence 8. directness.
