The main result of the paper is a lower eigenvalue estimate for operators of the form \(D+f\) over a compact Riemannian spin manifold \(M\). Here \(D\) is the Dirac operator and \(f :M \to {\mathbb R}\) is a smooth function. The lower bound involves the dimension and the scalar curvature of \(M\), the energy-momentum tensor of the corresponding eigenspinor and \(f\). The equality case is discussed. Special emphasis is put on the case that \(M\) is a hypersurface of another Riemannian spin manifold \(N\) and \(f=-H/2\) where \(H\) is the mean curvature of \(M\) in \(N\).
