Motivated by some examples occurring in the representation theory of Artin algebras, the authors study the question of transporting exact structures on a category \(\mathcal A\) to a factor category by a relation \(\mathcal R\). Initially, they consider \(\mathcal A\) to be exact and prove a necessary and sufficient condition for \({\mathcal A}/{\mathcal R}\) to be also exact. They also discuss how almost split pairs are transferred to the factor category. At the end, they give applications to two particular situations envolving the representation theory of algebras. First, they give a different proof of the well-known result that if \(A\) is an Artin algebra, then the category \(\text{mod}(\text{mod }A)\) of the finitely presented functors from the category \(\text{mod }A\) to the category of Abelian groups is Abelian and has almost split sequences. Finally, they apply their results to look at the category of regular modules over a wild hereditary algebra.
