Let \(G\) be a finite group and let \(p\) be a prime divisor of \(|G|\). Suppose that a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) of \(G\) is Abelian. M. Broué has conjectured that in this case, the principal \(p\)-block of \(G\) and the principal \(p\)-block of \(N_G(P)\), the normalizer of \(P\) in \(G\), are derived equivalent. The conjecture is known to be true when \(G\) is \(p\)-solvable, when \(P\) is cyclic, when \(G=\text{SL}(2,p^n)\), when \(G=J_1\), the smallest Janko group, and in some other cases. The authors add a new family of examples to the list of groups for which the conjecture is true by proving the following. Suppose that \(G=\text{SU}(3,q^2)\) is the special unitary group of degree 3, where \(q\) is a power of a prime. Let \(p\) be a prime divisor of \(q+1\), with \(p\geq 5\). Then Broué's conjecture holds for \(G\) with respect to \(p\). Furthermore, the authors show that the equivalence obtained is splendid, in the sense of J. Rickard. The authors make use of new results of Okuyama, and Gollan and Okuyama, in proving their main theorem.
