The author presents a numerical study of the influence of the spatial modulation of the dispersion coefficient on soliton propagation for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation as a function of both the amplitude and frequency of the modulation. It is shown that the amplitude, frequency and length of the spatial modulation play a key role in determining the soliton dynamics. The results presented in this paper show that a localized spatial nonuniformity may be used as a wave guide in applications. It is also been shown that, for a time-dependent dispersion index, the soliton may be split into new ones of smaller amplitude than the initial soliton, its amplitude may oscillate, or the soliton may disappear if the dispersion index reaches negative values. A comparison between space and time variations of the dispersion index is presented.
