For a Dedekind domain \(R\) and a finite group \(G\) the Grothendieck-Witt group \(GW(R,G)\) was introduced by A. Dress in 1975. If \(K\) is the field of fractions of \(R\), there is an exact sequence \[ 0 \to GW(R,G) \to GW(K,G) \to \bigoplus GW(R/p,G) \] where \(p\) runs through all maximal ideals of \(R\). The last map in the sequence, denoted \(\delta\), is said to be the Witt decomposition map. The author proves that \(\delta\) is surjective for all finite groups \(G\) when \(K\) is a finite extension of the \(p\)-adic number field. For \(K\) a number field, \(\delta\) is also surjective when \(G\) is a group of odd order and the class number of the field is odd. The author shows that for \(K\) the field of rational numbers and \(G\) the dihedral group the Witt decomposition map \(\delta\) is not in general surjective. The cokernel of \(\delta\) is then \(C/C^2\), where \(C\) is the class group of the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field.
