The authors consider a Newtonian fluid film between rotating and stationary discs, and study the combined effect of inertia, acceleration of the discs and magnetic field. The numerical results show that the rate of thining of the fluid is strongly influenced by the inertia and magnetic forces when the Reynolds number is large. When the disc has a finite acceleration at the start-up, the inertia and magnetic effects are important even at low Reynolds numbers, and the rate of thining of the film is reduced. The authors also show that for both low and high Reynolds numbers the film thickness increases with Hartmann number for a fixed time.
