Using analytical methods, the author investigates the coupling of void damage and dissipation. The basic equations are given for a quite general viscoplastic dilatant constitutive behaviour. Strain localization is studied with perturbation analysis which is not limited to time-independent plasticity, and gives a continuous indication on localization rather than on a critical state, in better agreement with the progressive nature of ductile fracture. The author derives constitutive equations for porous metal plasticity, establishes expressions for dissipated and stored energy, and compares them experimental data. A simple form of the heat balance equation is proposed. Finally, the author performs the linear stability analysis of the perturbation, and discusses effects of various factors on ductile fracture: thermal softening, damage softening, strain and strain rate, viscosity, stress state and stress triaxiality, shear localization and opening localization.
