Polynomial representations of degree \(r\) over \(\text{GL}_n\) are modules over the Schur algebra \(S(n,r)\). Donkin observed that Schur algebras have finite global dimension. The precise value of the global dimension has been determined by \textit{B. Totaro} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 482, 1-13 (1997; Zbl 0859.20034)] when \(r\leq n\). \textit{S. Donkin} [The \(q\)-Schur algebra, Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 253 (1998; Zbl 0927.20003)] generalized Totaro's result to the quantum case. The case \(r>n\) is open. The article under review studies this case and solves the problem for \(n=2,3\) (and the quantum analogue for \(n=2\)). The main technical ingredient is a `good \(p\)-filtration' of dual Weyl modules by modules which are tensor products of simple modules with Frobenius twists of dual Weyl modules.
