Generalized fixed point algebras were introduced by \textit{M. A. Rieffel} to play the role of orbit spaces for proper in a sense actions of a l.c. group \(G\) on noncommutative \(C^*\)-algebras, see [Prog. Math. 84, 141-182 (1991; Zbl 0749.22003)] The paper provides a detailed analysis of Rieffel's construction and the relevant notions of square-integrability in a wider framework of group actions on Hilbert modules. Given an equivariant Hilbert module \({\mathcal E}\) over a \(G\)-acted \(C^*\)-algebra \(B\) and a ``relatively continuous'' subset \({\mathcal R}\) within the dense ``square-integrable'' set \({\mathcal E}_{si}\subset {\mathcal E}\), the author constructs a Hilbert module \({\mathcal F}={\mathcal F}({\mathcal E},{\mathcal R})\) over the reduced crossed product \(C_r^*(G,B)\) of \(G\) and \(B\). The generalized fixed point algebra \(\text{Fix}({\mathcal E},{\mathcal R})\) is isomorphic to the \(C^*\)-algebra of compact operators on \(F\). The conditions for existence and canonical choice of \({\mathcal R}\) are discussed and dependence of \(\text{Fix}({\mathcal E},{\mathcal R})\) on \({\mathcal R}\) is studied. It is proved that all Hilbert modules over \(C_r^*(G,B)\) arise as \({\mathcal F}({\mathcal E},{\mathcal R})\) for a suitable pair \(({\mathcal E},{\mathcal R})\) and under some restrictions on \({\mathcal R}\), such \(({\mathcal E},{\mathcal R})\) is unique up to isomorphism. It is noted that an extension of the scope to groupoids is possible and also a large part of the work is given in a setting allowing coactions or actions of Hopf algebras.
