The analogue of the Jackson theorem in the space \(L_2\) for the approximations by Steklov's functions is as follows. Theorem A: For the periodic function \(f(x)\in L_2\) with period \(2\pi\) the following relations are equivalent (see [\textit{G. V. Zhidkov}, ``Investigations on algebra and analysis'' (V. M. Filippov (Ed.)), Rossijskij Universitet, Moscow, 42-46 (1993; Zbl 0866.42002)]) \[ \|f-f_h\|_2 = O(h^\alpha)\quad\text{and}\quad E_n(f)_2 = O(n^{-\alpha}),\qquad h>0 ,\quad 0<\alpha<2. \] This paper deals with necessary and sufficient conditions, which positive function \(\omega(h)\) should satisfy, so that the relations \(\|f-f_h\|_2 = O(\omega(h))\) and \(E_n(f)_2 = O(\omega(1/n))\) are equivalent. Also, some generalizations of Theorem A for the case of the metric \(L_p\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\), are considered.
