The authors continue the investigations of \textit{M. Väth} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 257, 223-237 (2001; Zbl 1021.47026)]. To define condensing operators, they use arbitrary meaures of noncompactness. An important result is that for \(f\) being countably \(\Gamma\)-condensing on \(\Omega\) (open and bounded) in a Banach space with \(f(x)\neq x\) on \(\partial\Omega\), from \(\text{Deg(id}-f)\neq 0\) it follows that \(\text{id}-f\) is a \(0\)-epi map. The converse statement that \(\text{id}-f\) being a \(0\)-epi map implies \(\text{Deg(id}-f)\neq 0\) is a main result proved in Theorem 3.2: In case 1, the map \(f\) is supposed to be strictly countably \(\Gamma\)-condensing on a bounded open connected set, in case 2, the map \(f\) is required to be countably \(\Gamma\)-condensing on a bounded open connected set and fulfills a further condition. As a consequence, one obtains that for \(f\) strictly countably \(\Gamma\)-condensing on a bounded open set \(\Omega\) with \(f(x)\neq x\) on \(\partial\Omega\), the conditions \(\text{id}-f\) is \(0\)-epi and \(\text{Deg(id}-f)\neq 0\) on a component of \(\Omega\) are equivalent (Theorem 3.3). This is an extension of a main result of the paper mentioned above, where \(\Omega\) is a Jordan domain and \(f\) is supposed to be countably \(\tfrac 12\)-condensing on \(\Omega\). I want to mention also that in this paper -- especially in the Introduction -- many interesting remarks are given.
