Orthogonality of linear combinations of two orthogonal polynomial sequences (Q5953955)

Let \(\{Q_n\}\) and \(\{R_n\}\), \(n\) nonnegative integers, be two sequences of monic orthogonal polynomials with resepct to quasi-definite moment functionals. The authors consider the problem to find necessary and sufficient conditions such that certain linear combinations of the polynomial sequences above are again monic orthogonal polynomials. The case of a linear perturbation problem and the case of a convex combination are investigated. For the proofs it is essentially used that such sequences of polynomials satisfy three-term recurrence relations.
