Let \(S\) be a semitopological semigroup and \(V\) (resp. \({\mathcal V}\)) a variety of semigroups (resp., groups). It is known (cf., e.g., Theorem 3.3.9 of Analysis on Semigroups by \textit{J. F. Berglund, H.D. Junghenn,} and \textit{P. Milnes} [John Wiley and Sons (1989; Zbl 0727.22001)]) that \(S\) has a compactification \((\psi_V, X_V)\) (resp., \((\psi_{\mathcal V}, X_{\mathcal V})\)) which is universal with respect to the property that \(X\) is a member of \(V\) (resp., \({\mathcal V}\)). Also, the general theory of semigroup compactifications yields that \((\psi_V, X_V)\) (resp. \((\psi_{\mathcal V}, X_{\mathcal V})\)) is isomorphic to a compactification \((\varepsilon, S^{{\mathcal F}_V})\) (resp., \((\varepsilon, S^{{\mathcal F}_{\mathcal V}})\)), where \(S^{{\mathcal F}_V}\) (resp., \(S^{{\mathcal F}_{\mathcal V}}\)) is the spectrum of a certain \(C^*\)-subalgebra of the \(C^*\)-algebra of bounded, continuous, complex-valued functions on \(S\), and \(\varepsilon\colon S\to S^{{\mathcal F}_V}\) (resp., \(\varepsilon\colon S\to S^{{\mathcal F}_{\mathcal V}}\)) is the evaluation mapping (see Theorem 3.1.7 of op. cit.). In the present paper the author describes the \(C^*\)-subalgebras \({\mathcal F}_V\) and \({\mathcal F}_{\mathcal V}\), thus obtaining a generalization of earlier results [see \textit{H. R. Ebrahimi-Vishki} and \textit{M. A. Pourabdollah}, Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 22, 85-89 (1999; Zbl 0916.22004)].
