Author's abstact: We investigate one step of an optimal norm-reducing method with shear \(T_{kj}\) on the pivot pair \((k,j):A\mapsto T_{kj}AT_{kj}^{-1}\) without the usual restriction that \(\det (T_{kj})=1\) [cf. \textit{P. J. Eberlein}, J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 10, 74-88 (1962; Zbl 0104.34401); \textit{M. H. C. Paardekooper}, Doctoral Dissertation, Eindhoven Inst.\ of Technology, (1969; Zbl 0207.15604)]. The norm \(\widetilde h(Z)=\|T_{kjh}AT_{kj}^{-1}\|_F\) can be expressed in terms of the nontrivial elements of \(X=Z^*Z\). Here \(Z\) is the essential pair of the shear \(T_{kj}\). The resolvent and structural parameters that appear by solving the problem \(\inf \{\widetilde h(Z)\), \(\det Z\neq 0\}\) are invariant with respect to some unitary shear transformations. This study provides invariant formulas for Paardekooper's method that is based on the solution of the problem \(\inf \{\widetilde h(Z)\), \(\det Z=1\}\).
