The notion of topological radical of a topological algebra was introduced by \textit{P. Dixon} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 74, 174--200 (1997; Zbl 0873.46025)]. \textit{C. J. Read} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 56, 595--606 (1997; Zbl 0892.57005)] showed that there is a radical Banach algebra which is not topologically radical. In the paper under review, it is stated (without any proofs) that there are compact radical Banach algebras which either are not topologically radical, have no maximal chains of closed ideals, or have infinite-dimensional minimal closed ideals. Among other results, it is stated that the projective tensor product of radical Banach algebra and hypercompact Banach algebras is radical, every infinite-dimensional compact radical Banach algebra has an infinite chain of closed ideals, and the space of primitive ideals (in the Jacobson topology) of a separable scattered (that is, every element has (at most) countable spectrum) Banach algebra is discrete. Moreover, the rad-commutativity (that is, the commutativity of \(A/\text{ rad}A\)) of Banach algebras and properties of Engel Banach algebras are considered. Reviewer's remark: The topological radical of a topological algebra \(A\) has been defined in the reviewer's paper [Math. Stud., Tartu 1, 25--31 (2001; Zbl 1044.46039)] as the intersection of kernels of all continuous irreducible representations of \(A\) on linear topological Hausdorff spaces. The topological radical of a topological algebra in this sense is not considered in the article under reviewed.
