The paper presents a method for the design of robust nonlinear flight controllers for an aircraft. This method combines feedback linearization, structured singular value \((\mu)\) synthesis, and time-scale separation techniques to design controllers which accurately track pilot inputs, maintain desirable handling qualities, reduce actuator saturation and minimize controller scheduling. The methodology is applied to an angle-of-attack command system for longitudinal control of a high performance aircraft. Nonlinear simulations demonstrate that the controller satisfies handling quality requirements and exhibits exellent robustness over a wide range of angles of attack and Mach numbers.
