The authors provide a set of abstract conditions on dynamical systems (including non-invertible ones) and develop a corresponding renewal theory framework; this set of conditions includes the existence of Banach spaces with certain good properties. This allows them to obtain mixing (and in some cases sharp mixing) rates for reasonable large classes of invertible systems preserving an infinite measure. The examples explicitly considered include the invertible analogue of both Markov and non-Markov unit interval maps. For these examples, in addition to optimal results on mixing and rates of mixing in the infinite case, results on the decay of correlations in the infinite case of invertible non-Markov maps are obtained. The proposed method consists of a combination of operator theory in the context of dynamical systems, see [\textit{O. Sarig}, Invent. Math. 150, No. 3, 629--653 (2002; Zbl 1042.37005)], with the framework of function spaces of distributions developed recently by \textit{M. Blank} et al. [Nonlinearity 15, No. 6, 1905--1973 (2002; Zbl 1021.37015)].
