The paper is devoted to the development and analysis of numerical methods for solving \(d\)-dimensional ordinary differential equation systems of the form \(q''(t) +Mq(t) = f(q(t))\) with certain \((d \times d)\) matrices \(M\). Special attention is devoted to the case that \(M\) is symmetric and positive definite and that \(f(q) = -\nabla U(q)\) with a smooth function \(U\), which implies that the solution \(q\) describes a nonlinear multi-frequency oscillator. The numerical methods are based on the classical collocation technique; hence they yield approximate solutions throughout the entire interval of interest and not only at a discrete set of points. The ansatz functions are based on a truncation of the local Fourier expansion. Thus, by choosing the exact truncation point, one has an easy method for controlling the algorithm's convergence order. Stability issues are discussed as well, and it is shown that, in the limit case \(M \to 0\), the approach yields some Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods that can be seen to be symplectic under suitable conditions.
