Let \(F\) be a global function field of characteristic \(p\) and \(K/F\) an \(l\)-adic Lie extension of finite dimension \(d \geq 1\), where \(l \not= p\). Let \(G\) be the Galois group of \(K/F\) and suppose that \(K/F\) is unramified outside a finite set of places of \(F\). When \(M\) is a \(G\)-module, the Euler characteristic of \(M\) is defined to be \[ \chi(G,M) := \prod_{i \geq 0} |H^i(G,M)|^{(-1)^i} \] whenever the expression on the right-hand side makes sense. In this paper, the author gives (under certain conditions) two formulas for the Euler characteristic \(\chi(G, \mathrm{Sel}_{l}(A/K))\), where \(A/F\) is an abelian variety and \(\mathrm{Sel}_{l}(A/K)\) denotes the \(l\)-power Selmer group of \(A\) over \(K\). The first formula mainly depends on the cohomology and Euler characteristic of the torsion points, whereas the second is more of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type. So it involves the Tate-Shafarevich group, the \(l\)-power torsion points of \(A\) and of its dual abelian variety as well as some local factors. In the last section the formulas are specialized to the case of elliptic curves.
