This paper investigates systems subject to shocks, which arrive according to a Poisson process and cause some damage. If the accumulated damage exceeds a threshold \(Y\), the system fails and is replaced at constant cost \(c\). Moreover, the system is preventively replaced at cost \(g(x)\), if the damage exceeds a fixed level \(x\). Using as objective functions the total discounted cost and the long run average cost, respectively, optimal solutions with respect to the level \(x\) are stated.
