Let \(F\) denote a number field with adele ring \(\mathbb{A}\), and let \(E\) denote a quadratic extension of \(F\). Let \(V\) denote \((n+1)\)-dimensional hermitian space over \(E\), and let \(W\) stand for an \(n\)-dimensional subspace of \(V\). Let \((\pi, \sigma)\) denote a pair of cuspidal automorphic representations of the pair of unitary groups \((U(V), U(W))\) over \(\mathbb{A}\). Suppose that \(\pi\) and \(\sigma\) are unramified outside \(S\) and tempered inside \(S\), where \(S\) is a finite set of places of \(F\) containing all archimedean ones. To the pair \((\pi, \sigma)\) one can attach a branching coefficient \(\mathcal{L}(\pi, \sigma)\). In the paper under the review, the author studies the subconvexity problem, one of the most important problems in the analytic theory of \(L\)-functions. Assuming that \((\pi, \sigma)\) is away from the conductor dropping locus at some distinguished archimedean place, has a bounded ramification and satisfies certain local conditions at every other place, then \(\mathcal{L}(\pi, \sigma)\) has a subconvex bound. In particular, if \(\pi\) and \(\sigma\) are everywhere tempered, then there is a subconvex bound of the central \(L\)-value \[ L(\pi, \sigma, 1/2) \ll C(\pi \times \sigma)^{1/4 - \delta}\] for any fixed \[\delta < \frac{1}{8n^5 + 28n^4 + 42n^3 + 36n^2 + 14n} .\]
