In recent times, from the work of Hida in the 1980's, the study of congruences between modular forms modulo prime is one of the cornerstone of the subject. We (rather simplistically) describe the situation which Hida studies: if one has, roughly, a holomorphic primitive cusp form, and a prime \(p\) which divides the algebraic part of the value at \(s=1\) of the adjoint \(L\)-function attached to that form, then \(p\) is a congruence prime, i.e., there exists another cusp form of the same weight and level whose Fourier coefficients are congruent, modulo \(p\), to the Fourier coefficients of the original form. Through seven sections, in a considerably self-contained way, the authors of this article generalize this (an essentially \(\mathrm{GL}(2)\)-situation) to the \(\mathrm{GSp(4)}\) case in the following way (by their own words in the abstract): ``We establish the existence of congruences between a fixed endoscopic, globally generic, cuspidal automorphic representation \(\Pi\) of \(\mathrm{GSp}(4)\) of square-free conductor and stable cuspidal automorphic representations of the same weight modulo certain prime factors of the value at 1 of the adjoint \(L\)-function of \(\Pi\), normalized by a suitable period.''
