This article is the first part of a two-part series addressing the root-class separability of finitely generated abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of a graph of groups. The goal of this article is to describe the structure of finitely generated abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of an arbitrary graph of groups and give some auxiliary results.
