The paper under review is a contribution to the study of homomorphisms between Specht modules for Iwahori-Hecke algebras in type \(A\). The representation theory of these algebras (which generalises the modular representation theory of the symmetric group) is an important subject, and the Specht modules (which are precisely the simple modules in the case when the algebra is semisimple) play a crucial role. A recent trend in this area has been to try to compute the space of homomorphisms between two Specht modules. In 1979, Carter and Payne constructed a family of homomorphisms between Specht modules for the symmetric group, and the paper under review goes some way toward generalising this. The idea is to take two partitions of \(n\) whose Young diagrams differ only in two rows, and to construct a homomorphism between the corresponding Specht modules; the existence of these homomorphisms depends on divisibility conditions. The Carter-Payne theorem has apparently been generalised completely to the Iwahori-Hecke algebra in \textit{J. Dixon}'s Ph.D. thesis, but this remains unpublished. In the present paper, the authors construct homomorphisms between Specht modules of Carter-Payne type, but with certain additional restrictions. The advantage of the present paper is that the construction takes place entirely within the framework of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra, and the construction is very explicit. The paper is mostly well-written, and the index of notation is particularly helpful. Most of the technical part of the paper is relegated to the end, which makes the paper easier to read. The authors set up the framework for Specht modules very clearly; they use the dual Specht modules arising from the Murphy basis rather than the more usual Dipper-James version; but they make it clear how to translate between the two conventions. An important technique which lies at the heart of the construction in the paper is to realise the two Specht modules under consideration as subquotients of the restriction of a Specht module for a larger Iwahori-Hecke algebra, and to construct a suitable endomorphism of this larger module. This is achieved using Jucys-Murphy elements. The authors also consider composition of Carter-Payne homomorphisms and the Jantzen filtration; they consider the question of which is the smallest Jantzen submodule containing the image of a Carter-Payne homomorphism. It is not clear how strong or useful these results are.
