Approximate Birkhoff orthogonalities in normed spaces (Q6050070)

Due to the fundamental importance of the so called Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the study of Banach spaces, several variants and approximate versions of the same have been studied by several researchers in recent times. In this article, the author studies the approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality, and obtains a nice characterization in terms of the extreme points of the unit ball of the dual space. This line of investigation is in spirit of the famous James characterization of the said orthogonality in normed spaces, in terms of supporting functionals. Moreover, the author also studies the approximate orthogonality of compact operators on a reflexive Banach space using techniques which might also be useful in understanding similar problems in the normed setting. The results obtained in this article actually allow us to have refinements of several earlier results in the study of approximate orthogonality. Therefore, in the view of the reviewer, this is an important work which might be of interest to people working in the broad area of geometry of Banach spaces.
