Let \(S\) be a commutative ring with unit element \(1\not=0\). Then \(Z(S)\) is the set of its zero-divisors and \(Z^*(S)=Z(S)\setminus\{0\}\). For \(\delta\in S\), the annihilator of \(\delta\) is \(\mathrm{Ann}(\delta)=\{0\not=\omega\in S; \delta\omega=0\}\). The extended zero-divisor graph is undirected with vertex set \(Z^*(S)\) and two vertices \(\delta\) and \(\omega\) are adjacent if and only if \(\delta S\cap \mathrm{Ann}(\omega)\not=0\) or \(\omega S\cap \mathrm{Ann}(\delta)\not=0\). In this paper, the authors characterize finite rings whose extended zero-divisor graph is a tree, a unicycle, a split graph or an outerplanar graph. Also, they classify finite rings for which the extended zero-divisor graph is a planar, toroidal or projective.
