Let \(\mathcal{E = (A, S)}\) be an exact category, where \(\mathcal{A}\) is an additive category and \(\mathcal{S}\) is a class of kernel-cokernel pairs which satisfies axioms of \textit{T. Bühler} [Expo. Math. 28 (1), 1--69 (2010; Zbl 1192.18007), Definition 2.1]. An object \(P\in\mathcal{E}\) is called projective if the functor \(\mathrm{Hom}(P,-): \mathcal{E}\to\)Ab takes conflations to conflations. We say \(\mathcal{E}\) has enough projectives if for every object \(X\) there is a deflation \(P\to X\) with \(P\) projective. Now, let \(\mathcal{E = (A, S)}\) be an exact category with enough projectives \(P\). In the paper under review, the authors introduce the notion of support \(\tau\)-tilting subcategories of \(\mathcal{E}\). Note that, it is compatible with the existing definitions of support \(\tau\)-tilting modules (subcategories) in various contexts and it is also a generalization of tilting subcategories of exact categories. The authors show that there is a bijection between support \(\tau\)-tilting subcategories and certain \(\tau\)-cotorsion pairs. Moreover, given a support \(\tau\)-tilting subcategory \(\mathcal{T}\), they find a subcategory \(\mathcal{E_T}\) of \(\mathcal{E}\) which is an exact category and \(\mathcal{T}\) is a tilting subcategory of \(\mathcal{E_T}\). If \(\mathcal{E}\) is Krull-Schmidt exact category, the authors prove that the cardinal \(|\mathcal{T}|\) is equal to the number of isomorphism classes of indecomposable projectives \(Q\) such that \(\mathrm{Hom}_{\mathcal{E}}(Q,\mathcal{T}) \neq 0\). They also show a functorial version of Brenner-Butler's theorem.
