This paper is devoted to study the damped wave or Schrödinger equations on a compact Riemannian manifold, under the action of a damping function \(a=a(x)\). The authors establish the following fact: if the measure of the set \(\{x\in M;a(x) \neq 0 \}\) is strictly positive, then the decay in time of the associated energy is at least logarithmic. The authors do not make any assumption on the curvature of the manifold. The study of the decay rates for this model has been addressed by the seminal works of \textit{C. Bardos} et al. [SIAM J. Control Optim. 30, No. 5, 1024--1065 (1992; Zbl 0786.93009)] and of \textit{G. Lebeau} [Math. Phys. Stud. 19, 73--109 (1996; Zbl 0863.58068)]. The strategy of the proof combines the spectral inequalities obtained in [\textit{N. Burq} and \textit{I. Moyano}, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 25, No. 4, 1349--1377 (2023; Zbl 1514.35068)] with a sharp characterisation of the logarithmic decay of energy from \textit{C. J. K. Batty} and \textit{T. Duyckaerts} [J. Evol. Equ. 8, No. 4, 765--780 (2008; Zbl 1185.47043)] and \textit{N. Burq} [Acta Math. 180, No. 1, 1--29 (1998; Zbl 0918.35081)].
