    Let \(M\) be a compact connected hyperbolic surface with a constant negative curvature of \(-1\). The author investigates the long time behavior of the damped wave equation on \(M\) with damping function \(a\in C^\infty (M)\) where \(a\geq 0\) but \(a\not\equiv 0\). For initial data \((v_0,v_1)\in H^1(M)\times L^2(M)\), consider the energy of the solution \[ E(v(t)) := \tfrac12 \int_M |\partial_t v(t,x)|^2 + |\nabla v(t,x)|^2 dx. \] It is shown that, for every \(s > 0\), there exist constants \(C > 0\) and \(\gamma = \gamma (s) > 0\) such that, for any \((v_0,v_1)\in \mathcal{H}^s := H^{s+1}(M)\times H^s(M)\), the energy \(E(v(t))\) decays exponentially as follows: \[ E(v(t)) \leq C\ e^{-\gamma t} \|(v_0,v_1)\|_{\mathcal{H}^s}^2. \] An interesting side remark is that the proof employs the fractal uncertainty principle.
