The authors disprove several conjectures concerning non-existence of deformations of non-compact manifolds with negative scalar curvature bounded from below. The notion of incompressibility of certain submanifolds is strongly required to confirm that such metrics are unique up to deformation. A simple 3-dimensional counterexample is made explicit.
