In this paper, the authors provide sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions for the fifth order differential equation \[ x^{(5)}=\alpha\beta\mu x-\beta\mu x' -\alpha(\beta+\mu)x''-(\beta+\mu)x'''-\alpha x'''' +\varepsilon f(t,x,x',x'',x''',x'''') \] and for the \(\mathbb{R}^6\) system \[ \begin{cases} x'=y,\, &y'=-x-\varepsilon F(t,x,y,z,u,v,w),\\ z'=u,\, &u'=-z-\varepsilon G(t,x,y,z,u,v,w),\\ v'=w,\, &w'=-v-\varepsilon H(t,x,y,z,u,v,w). \end{cases} \] based on two different results of averaging theory of the first order. \par In the fifth order differential equation case, it is assumed that \(\alpha,\beta\in\mathbb{Q}\) are different from 0, \(\alpha\neq\pm\beta\), \(\alpha,\beta\neq\pm\mu\), \(f\) is \(2k\pi\)-periodic and a non degeneracy condition in a function involving rational trigonometric combinations of the equation coefficients to obtain a periodic solution \(x(t)\) which converges to the to a solution of the unperturbed equation when \(\varepsilon\rightarrow0\). \par On the other hand, assuming in the \(\mathbb{R}^6\) system \(F\), \(G\) and \(H\) \(2\pi\)-periodic functions and a similar non degeneracy condition, the system possesses a periodic solution converging to a \(2\pi\)-periodic solution of the unperturbed system when \(\varepsilon\rightarrow0\).
