In [\textit{J. Arthur}, Colloquium Publications. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (2013; Zbl 1310.22014)], a classification of the discrete spectrum of square integrable automorphic forms on a quasi-split special orthogonal group \(\mathrm{SO}_{n}\) or a symplectic group \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}\) over a number field is provided. This classification says that the set of square integrable automorphic representations is divided into disjoint subsets called global \(A\)-packets. An element in a global \(A\)-packet is defined as the tensor product of elements of local \(A\)-packets. In other words, the local \(A\)-packets classify the local factors of square integrable automorphic representations. In the paper under review, the author provides an algorithm to determine all local \(A\)-packets which contain a given irreducible representation of \(p\)-adic \(\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}\) or \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}\). In particular, the author determines whether a given irreducible representation is of Arthur type or not.
