Let \(X\) be a Banach space. A closed subspace \(Y \subset X\) is said to be a \(U\)-subspace if every non-zero continuous linear functional on \(Y\) has a unique norm-preserving extension to \(X\). This notion due to \textit{R.~R. Phelps} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 95, 238--255 (1960; Zbl 0096.31102)] has been well studied in the last 60~years and has turned out to be a great tool in understanding the geometry of a Banach space. The notion depends on the specific embedding (into isometry) of \(Y\) in \(X\). A classical example is that the sequence space \(c\) is not a \(U\)-subspace of its bidual \(\ell^\infty\), under the canonical embedding. In Corollary~6.16, the authors show that \(c\) can be embedded as a \(U\)-subspace of \(C([0,1])\). Since any Banach space embeds as a subspace of a \(C(\Omega)\) space, for a compact set \(\Omega\), this paper studies the question `When can a Banach space be embedded as a \(U\)-subspace of a \(C(\Omega)\) space?'. For compact sets \(K\) and \(S\), Theorem~6.21 provides a characterzation of \(U\)-embedding of \(C(K)\) in \(C(S)\), in terms of a continuous embedding \(h:K \rightarrow S\) such that \(h(K)\) is a \(G_{\delta}\) and admits a norm one extension operator. Reviewer's remark. For a compact convex set \(K\), let \(A(K)\) denote the space of real-valued affine continuous functions on \(K\), equipped with the supremum norm. In a recent work appearing in the same journal, for a Choquet simplex \(K\), the reviewer has studied \(U\)-subspaces \(X\) of \(A(K)\) spaces focussing on the facial structure of the dual unit ball of \(X\).
