The author introduces a majorant condition in analyzing local convergence of the Newton method for nonlinear equations in Banach space. It is shown that convexity of the derivative of the majorant can be waived and the Lipschitz condition of the operator can be relaxed. Uniqueness of the local solution, convergence rate and optimal domain of convergence are established. Computational aspects of the method are briefly discussed.
