Recall that a Hermitian metric \(g\) on a complex manifold \((M,J)\) of complex dimension \(n\) is called balanced (or semi-Kähler) if its fundamental 2-form \(\omega =g(J.,.)\) satisfies \(d(\omega^{n-1})=0\), and it is called pluriclosed if \(dJd\omega =0\). The authors prove that given any even-dimensional non-compact real simple Lie group \(G\) of inner type and any cocompact lattice \(\Gamma\) in \(G\), there exist an invariant complex structure \(J\) and an invariant \(J\)-Hermitian balanced metric \(g\) on both \(G\) and the compact quotient \(M=G / \Gamma\). It is also proved that the complex manifold \((M,J)\) does not carry any pluriclosed metric, in contrast to the case of even-dimensional compact Lie groups which admit pluriclosed metrics but no balanced metrics.
