It is a general problem to find nice metrics on a complex manifold. With the present paper, the author introduces and studies a new class of complex manifolds which contains the Kaehler manifolds but also non- Kaehler manifolds as for example: 1-dimensional families of Kaehler varieties, the twistor spaces constructed from self-dual Riemannian 4- manifolds and complex solvmanifolds. We sketch the class of metrics studied by the author. Let h be a Hermitian metric on a complex manifold X and \(T_ h\) be the torsion tensor of the associated canonical Hermitian connection. Then \(T_ h\) can be thought as a 1-form with values in the endomorphisms of TX. Thus we have a real-valued 1-form \(\sigma_ h=Trace(T_ h)\) which is called the torsion 1-form of h. The metric h is called balanced if its torsion 1-form vanishes identically on X. The study of the existence of balanced metrics is the main purpose of the paper.
