After the success of Painlevé for the classification of second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations with the Painlevé property (i.e., having no movable critical singular points), Chazy discussed the analysis of the Painlevé property for a third-order nonlinear equation with six poles and presented a system of equations for its coefficients describing necessary and sufficient conditions for the Painlevé property of the equation. This system, called now the Chazy system, consists of 31 algebraic and differential equations for 26 unknown functions. In this paper, the authors construct the solution of the Chazy system in the case when the location of the poles is constant as well as in the general case under some restrictions. Briefly reviewing Chazy's discussion, the authors first reproduce a derivation of the Chazy system in a more rigorous manner. Then, by eliminating the unknown variables of the system successively with the help of the computer algebra system \texttt{Mathematica}, they succeed in giving the solution of the Chazy system in a closed and explicit form. The results of the paper were announced in [\textit{V. I. Gromak}, Differ. Equ. 43, No.~5, 631--635 (2007; Zbl 1144.34058)]. The paper under review also corrects some preceding erroneous results on this subject [cf. \textit{N. A. Lukashevich}, Differ. Uravn. 29, No.~2, 353--357 (1993; Zbl 0794.34008); \textit{A. V.
