The authors study Grassmannians, flag varieties, and their Schubert varieties via their coordinate algebras, when embedded in a projective space. In earlier such works a valuation (a map from a coordinate ring to a Q-vector space) played an important role. In particular, that valuation established links between Standard Monomial Theories, Newton-Okounkov bodies, and degenerations of Grassmannians. In the present paper the authors define and study valuations and quasi-valuations for Lakshmibai-Seshadri algebras, which are generalizations of coordinate algebras of Grassmannians. The geometric arguments on Seshadri stratifications are replaced by combinatorial tools and arguments about the straightening relations. These investigations are applied to Schubert varieties, showing that so-called Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths encode vanishing multiplicities with respect to the web of Schubert varieties.
