Looking for a connection between standard monomial theory and valuations as vanishing order of functions, \textit{X. Fang} and \textit{P. Littelmann} [Trans. Mosc. Math. Soc. 2017, 275--297 (2017; Zbl 1397.14065)] considered the case of Grassmann varieties and using a web of Schubert subvarieties constructed a quasi-valuation by choosing adequate minimum vanishing orders at each step. To go further in this setup and find a Newton-Okounkov interpretation together with its associated (semi)toric degenerations, \textit{R. Chirivì} et al. [``Seshadri stratifications and standard monomial theory'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:2112.03776}] introduced and developed the theory of Seshadri stratifications of embedded projective varieties. They showed that these stratifications provide a geometric setup towards a standard monomial theory for embedded projective varieties, obtaining a Newton-Okounkov simplicial complex and a flat degeneration of the given variety to a union of toric varieties. In the article under review, the authors study the Seshadri stratification of a Schubert variety using its Schubert subvarieties. Their main results show that this stratification is balanced and normal and the associated (quasi)valuation has a fan of monoids given by a lattice type realization of the Littelmann-Seshadri path model. They also prove that there exists a flat degeneration of the given Schubert variety with special fiber a union of equidimensional projective normal toric varieties.
