In this article, the authors device a new algorithm to account for certain changes in bacterial genome, by way of a model that utilizes certain permutation groups. They use this model to also determine the evolutionary distance between two different genomes. The use of permutation groups is at the same time natural and interesting, particularly in the way they make use of them to calculate the common ancestor of two genomes. They finish their paper by studying the algorithmic complexity of the algorithm the authors propose.
