In this work \(M\) and \(N\) denote topological or metric spaces. The author devotes his efforts to study topologies on the space \(C^0( M, N)\) of all continuous maps \(f: M\to N\). In contrast with classical strong and weak topologies on \(C^0(M,N)\) the author defines the ``mild topology'' and compares the properties of these three topologies. Particularly he gives a comparison with respect to proper continuous maps \(f\in C^0( M, N)\), and affine actions whenever \(N=\mathbb{R}^n \). In order to define the mild topology he uses separation functions somewhat weaker but similar to the usual distance function \(d(x,y)\) in a metric space \((M,d)\). Section 2 is devoted to defining separation functions which are used to define pseudo balls that are a base for a \(T_2\) topology. Some examples of separation functions and their applications are given. In Section 3 the mild topology on \(C^0( M, N)\) is introduced and some of its properties are proved. Its relation with strong and weak topologies is shown, and its metrizability is analysed in Section 3.1.
