Let \(G\) be a profinite group, \(x \in G\) and \(\mathcal{S}_{G}(x)=\{ g \in G \mid \langle g,x \rangle \mbox{ is soluble }\}\) the ``solubilizer'' of \(x\) in \(G\) (in general \(\mathcal{S}_{G}(x)\) is not a subgroup of \(G\)). It has been conjectured that \(\mathcal{S}_{G}(x)\) has positive Haar measure if and only \(x\) centralizes ``almost all'' the non-abelian chief factors of \(G\). The proof of the above conjecture can be reduced to another conjecture concerning finite almost simple groups: there exists a \(c>0\) such that, for every finite simple group \(S\) and every \((a,b)\in \big (\mathrm{Aut}(S) \setminus \{1\} \big) \times \mathrm{Aut}(S)\) the number of \(s\in S\) such that \(\langle a, bs\rangle\) is insoluble is at least \(c|S|\). In the paper under review the author proves the second conjecture for alternating groups.
