A proof of a Bogomolov-type inequality for semi-stable holomorphic vector bundles on Kähler manifolds can be based upon the existence of approximate Hermite-Einstein structures. In the present article, twisted holomorphic vector bundles on compact Gauduchon manifolds are studied. These structures were introduced by \textit{J. Giraud} [Cohomologie non abélienne. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1971; Zbl 0226.14011)] as sheaves of modules over Azumaya algebras. Given a complex manifold \(M\) and a \(2\)-cocycle \(\alpha\) with values in \(\mathcal O^*_M\) an \(\alpha\)-twisted holomorphic vector bundle on \(M\) can be defined in a way such that the coboundary determined by transition functions equals \(\alpha\cdot id\). The equivalence of the existence of approximate Hermite-Einstein structures for a twisted holomorphic vector bundle on a compact Gauduchon manifold and its semi-stability is the statement of the first main theorem (Theorem~1.1). The necessary fundamental notions of differential geometry and analysis of hermitian twisted holomorphic vector bundles are explained. The various existing methods are discussed and the proof of the first main theorem, which is based on the continuity method, is given. Once these methods are established, a computation of the pertinent integrals involving Chern character forms is possible. The second main theorem of the article (Theorem~1.2) states a Bogomolov-type inequality in this situation: Here \((M, \widetilde\omega)\) is assumed to be an Astheno-Kähler manifold (i.e., \(\partial\overline\partial\widetilde\omega^{n-2}=0\)), and \(\omega\) a Gauduchon metric that is conformal to \(\widetilde\omega\). Then a twisted \(\omega\)-semi-stable bundle satisfies a Bogomolov inequality with respect to \(\widetilde\omega\). Furthermore, the article contains a comprehensive discussion of available methods and existing results.
