      The authors propose an efficient approach to estimate the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE). They introduce and summarize some background material including the relevant properties to be considered. In particular, they define the concept of FTLE in a given velocity field and then discuss the use of the ``radial basis function'' for interpolating scattered data. They also mention flow map reconstruction based on velocity interpolation. The authors develop a sparse subsampling approach to detect relevant flow measurements for velocity reconstruction instead of incorporating all available velocity measurements and use their algorithms to obtain the flow field with an impermeable condition from a set of Lagrangian trajectory data. This research work contains two main contributions. They first extend their previous algorithm in [Commun. Comput. Phys. 26, No. 4, 1143--1177 (2019; Zbl 1482.37088)] to reconstruct a flow field with an impermeable condition. To solve the corresponding under-determined system for reconstructing the global velocity field, the authors propose a \(L_{1}\) optimization framework that can lead to a sparse reconstruction algorithm. Therefore, the overall algorithm can automatically identify and extract a sparse subset of velocity measurements for the FTLE computations. Further, the authors present some algorithms for unsteady and steady flows. Some real-life numerical examples to test the effectiveness of their approaches are considered as well. For this purpose, the authors show some experiments by considering: (i) A non-rotating circular obstacle; (ii) A rotating circular obstacle; (iii) An application to the ocean surface currents based on a real-time dataset.
