The authors review the impact of the famous paper ``Ovoides et groupes de Suzuki'' by \textit{J. Tits} [Arch. Math. 13, 187--198 (1962; Zbl 0109.39402)]. These groups were first discovered as finite (doubly transitive) permutation groups by \textit{M. Suzuki} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 46, 868--870 (1960; Zbl 0093.02301)]. Tits described these groups as twisted Chevalley groups of type \({}^2B_2\) (acting on ovoids) and extended the construction to imperfect fields. Via the ovoids, the Suzuki groups act also on certain inversive planes and on the Lüneburg-Tits translation planes.
