The author studies manifolds with generalized complex structures. Let \(M\) be a \(2m\)-manifold and \(E=TM\oplus T^*M\). Let \(H\) be a closed \(3\)-form on \(M\). The \(H\)-twisted Courant bracket \([\ ,\ ]_H\) is defined on sections \(X+\xi\) of \(E\) as follows: \[ [X+\xi,Y+\eta]_H=[X,Y]-L_Y\xi-\frac12d(\eta(X)-\xi(Y))+Y\lrcorner X\lrcorner H. \] A generalized complex structure on \(M\) twisted by \(H\) is an endomorphism \(\mathcal J\in End(H)\) such that: \begin{itemize} \item[1)] \(\mathcal J^2=-id_E\) \item[2)] \(\mathcal J\) preserves pairing \(\langle\ ,\ \rangle\) where \(\langle X+\xi,Y+\eta\rangle=\frac12(\eta(X)+\xi(Y))\) \item[3)] the subbundle \(L\subset E^{\mathbb C}\) consisting of \(i\)-eigenvectors of \(\mathcal J\) is closed under \([\ ,\ ]_H\). \end{itemize} The author applies some constructions coming from symplectic geometry to a generalized complex setting. He introduces a generalized Luttinger surgery and a generalized Gluck twist along \(\mathcal J\)-symplectic submanifolds. He proves that there exist stable generalized complex structures with non-homotopy equivalent path-connected components of their type change locus. He also proves that if \((M, \mathcal J,H)\) is a stable generalized complex structure whose type change locus has \(k\) path-connected components, \(B\) is a \(\mathcal J\)-symplectic submanifold of \(M\), and \(\pi:\widetilde{M}\rightarrow M\) is a d-fold branch covering with branch locus \(B\), then there exists a stable generalized complex structure \((\widetilde{M}, \widetilde{ \mathcal J},\widetilde{H})\) whose type change locus has \(dk\) path-connected components.
