The study addresses the complex issue of spectral analysis of Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) schemes. These schemes are integral components of numerical methods used for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations. The authors specifically focus on the analysis of three-point WENO schemes and the associated challenges in understanding their spectral properties. The paper employs rigorous mathematical analysis and numerical simulations to delve into the problem. The authors analyse two types of WENO schemes, namely WENO3-JS and WENO3Z-JS, using a smoothness indicator. They also explore the spectral properties of these sub-schemes. The authors employ the use of average weights in their methodology and compare this with the approximated dispersion relation (ADR) method. The study's main findings indicate that the spectral properties of WENO schemes vary according to the type of smoothness indicator used. The authors find that the middle sub-scheme obtains an average weight larger than 1/3, making WENO3-JS more dissipative than the third-order linear underlying scheme. The authors also note that the WENO scheme using smoothness indicators of Type-A yields better results for long distance advection, compared to other WENO schemes. Interestingly, the authors observe that WENO3-JS is more dissipative than the linear scheme for all wavenumbers, a property that differentiates it from other WENO schemes using smoothness indicator of Type-A. The study also finds that for higher-order WENO schemes, off-centered sub-schemes are usually unstable for small results. In summary, the paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the spectral properties of WENO schemes, offering valuable insights for further research and application in solving hyperbolic partial differential equations.
