The Fokas-Lenell (FL) equation plays an important role in several applied mathematics fields and can be used for instance to localize waves in a nonlinear optical medium. In this paper, the authors use the inverse scattering transform to investigate the action-angle variables of the FL equation. First, the authors derive the FL equation from a variational principle. Then, they introduce the Poisson bracket and the Hamiltonian form of the FL equation, and define a matrix tensor product. Finally, the authors derive the Poisson brackets and the action-angle variables for real and imaginary continuous spectrum scattering data.
