For a finite group \(G\) and a finite \(G\)-group \(A\), the author introduces a commutative ring \(\Omega(G,A)\) called multiple Burnside ring. As an abelian group, \(\Omega(G,A)\) is finitely generated and free, and a basis is given by orbits of \(A^{\circ} \rtimes G\) on the set of all pairs \((H,\sigma)\) where \(H\) is a subgroup of \(G\) and \(\sigma : H\to A\) is a 1-cocycle. The author defines a ghost ring \(\widetilde{\Omega}(G,A)\) and constructs a short exact sequence \[ 0 \to \Omega(G,A) \to \widetilde{\Omega}(G,A) \to \text{Obs}(G,A) \to 0. \] Moreover, he gives formulae for the idempotents in \(\widetilde{\Omega}(G,A)\) and \(\Omega(G,A)\), and he applies his results in order to prove induction theorems in representation theory by Artin, Brauer, Dress and Boltje.
